DTH stands for 'Direct-to-Home' Satellite TV. Most of the people call the DTH TV as Dish TV because of the use of a Dish Antenna to receive the Satellite TV signals for Direct to Home service. On this page we will tell you which Dish TV is best in India
With a DTH connection the TV signals are coming straight from the satellite to your satellite dish and through a short cable from the satellite dish to your Set Top Box or STB and then straight to the TV through an HDMI cable. There is not much signal loss and you get very good picture and sound quality on the TV with DTH.
Cable TV operators also receive the same Satellite TV signals through a satellite dish and then distribute the signals through long cables to your house. There is a lot of signal loss in the long distribution cables of the Cable TV operators.
Most of the cable TV operators do not have digital services in the distribution by cables and the signal arrives in your TV by analogue RF signals, which are tuned to your TV by the TV's analogue tuner. You can never get as good a quality of picture or sound like DTH TV with Cable TV.
The channels that are offered by all the DTH companies in India are all almost the same TV channels. So to decide on which is the top Dish TV in India, we have to look at their technology, signal strength, picture quality, features of their equipments like recording HD STB or Set-Top-Box, the DTH TV monthly charges or monthly DTH TV subscription charges, DTH TV installation charges, etc. should be the deciding factor. We will give a short review of all the DTH services in India, but for a more in-depth comparison of DTH tv services in India, please visit our dedicated website www.BestDTH.com

On the DTH TV technology front Airtel Digital TV, VideoconD2H and TataSky are the best having MPEG-4 with DVB-S2 technology. Reliance Digital and Sun Direct TV uses MPEG-4 but they rely on older DVB-S1 technology. That leaves DishTV who uses older MPEG-2 Technology. The quality of the TV picture with both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 is about the same, but with older technology you need more bandwidth and hence much higher costs to rent transponders on satellites. For dishTV to switch to MPEG4 technology will be a very costly affair, because they will need to change the set top boxes of all their subscribers.
Airtel digital TV belongs to Bharati Airtel, the Company which runs the Airtel Mobile Telephone services.
Airtel started its DTH Satellite service in 8 October, 2008. Airtel Digital TV uses MPEG-4 with DVB-S2, the best Satellite DTH technology to date. The signals of Airtel Digital TV are transmitted through the INSAT-4C Satellite at 74°E and also the SES-7 Satellite at 108.2°E. This is the link to the full list of TV channels on Airtel Digital TV
BigTV of Reliance was launched on August 19, 2008 and was called Reliance BigTV then. Now the name has been changed to Reliance Digital. Reliance uses the MEASAT-3 Satellite at 91.5°East for its broadcasts and employs the MPEG-4 technology. This is the link to the full list of TV channels on Reliance Digital TV
DD Direct+ now renamed to "DD Free Dish" is the DTH service of Doordarshan, the Indian Government owned Broadcasting Corporation. DD Direct+ is a Free to Air (FTA) Service, which means that anyone in India can fit a small dish Antenna and receive the TV pictures for free, instead of paying the monthly fees charged by other DTH players. DD Direct+ now offers 57 television and 23 radio channels. This is the link to the full list of TV channels on DD Direct+ TV
DishTV is the first DTH operator in India. DishTV is a division of Zee Network Enterprise (Essel Group). DishTV uses MPEG-2 digital compression technology, transmitting from NSS-6 Satellite at 95.0 deg. E. Dish DTH was launched in 2004. On 28 Dec 2010 Dish TV announced that they have taken additional transponders on Asiasat Satellite. Since NSS-6 and AsiaSat Satellites are positioned close by, it allows existing customers to get the signal from Asiasat also. Since Dish TV uses the older MPEG-2 technology, DishTV needs to increase its transponder capacity at great expense due to the fact that MPEG-2 compression only allows half the number of channels per transponder when compared to those using MPEG-4 Compression. You must have an HD or an HD ready TV to watch HD channels in its true magnificence. HD TV is wide screen TV. The picture on the old TVs had a width to height ratio of 4:3, that is if the TV screen is 40 centimeters wide (cms) then the height of the TV screen would be 30 cms, but in an HD TV the width to height ratio is 16:9. So in an HD TV of 30 cms screen height, the width would be 53.3cms instead of the 40 cms in an ordinary TV.
